What Is Tamra Jal?

Tamra Jal, also written Tamra Jala, refers to water stored in a copper vessel. The name brings together the Sanskrit words for copper, tamra, and water, jala. Traditionally, water is left in a copper vessel overnight and consumed the following morning.

This practice belongs to Ayurveda’s broader tradition of daily routines, where attention to materials, water and the rhythm of the day is part of intentional living. Here, it offers a cultural connection to a longstanding ritual, not a promise of a medical result.

Copper’s Place in a Millennia-Old Tradition

Copper vessels have been used in India for thousands of years. Their significance goes beyond their warm metallic appearance: they connect household objects with the simple act of preparing and serving water with care.

For a contemporary home, that heritage can be an invitation to pause. Set the cup on your table, step away from the rush of the day and make an ordinary moment feel considered. The appeal is in the material, the history and the ritual itself.

Choose Your Size

  • 250 ml (8.45 US fl oz): a smaller cup for a compact table setting.
  • 350 ml (11.83 US fl oz): a larger option for those who prefer more capacity.
  • Material: pure copper.
  • Package contents: one cup in your selected size. The 250 ml (8.45 US fl oz) and 350 ml (11.83 US fl oz) cups are sold individually, not as a set.

Tradition and Modern Evidence

Ayurvedic tradition associates copper-stored water with wellbeing and the concept of dosha balance. These are traditional interpretations, not established clinical benefits of drinking from this cup. Clinical evidence for specific health outcomes from copper water remains limited.

This cup is not a water filter, disinfectant or treatment device. Copper drinkware should not be used to make unsafe water drinkable or as a way to treat a copper deficiency.

Care and Thoughtful Use

  • Wash before first use and follow the product’s care instructions.
  • Clean gently with mild soap and a soft cloth, rinse thoroughly and dry after washing.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners and prolonged soaking.
  • Do not put lemon water, juices, vinegar, wine or other acidic drinks in direct contact with copper.
  • Copper can develop a darker surface patina over time as part of its natural appearance.

The traditional practice of overnight water storage is described here as cultural background, not as a product-specific storage instruction. Follow the vessel’s food-contact and storage guidance before leaving drinking water in it for extended periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this cup made of pure copper?

Yes. The cup is made of pure copper and comes in 250 ml (8.45 US fl oz) and 350 ml (11.83 US fl oz) options.

What does Tamra Jal mean?

Tamra Jal means copper water and commonly describes water stored in a copper vessel, a practice associated with Ayurvedic daily routines.

Is every copper cup suitable for preparing Tamra Jal?

No. Traditional Tamra Jal involves water contacting copper. Interior coatings or linings change that contact, and any vessel used to store drinking water must be suitable for that purpose. A copper exterior alone does not establish suitability.

Does drinking from copper detox the body or balance the doshas?

Dosha balance is a traditional Ayurvedic concept. This cup does not come with a clinically proven detoxification or dosha-balancing benefit, and it is not a medical treatment.

Can I use it for lemon water or cocktails?

Do not use acidic beverages in direct contact with copper. Choose drinkware specifically suited to those beverages instead.

Will copper change color?

Yes. Copper naturally changes appearance with exposure to air and moisture. Gentle cleaning and thorough drying help maintain its finish.

The cup is as shown in the photo. The capacity does not match; at most 300 ml fits in, and that's right up to the brim. Overall, everything is fine.

350 ml is still small, but the copper mug is made from thick copper. very expensive if compared with other copper mugs of the same measure. but ok, it is a sturdy little mug for cold drinks. you'll burn your fingers if you try to drink tea of coffee from this mug. i bought it mainly for health reasons.
